THE PEACE SYMBOL
Peace Symbol Necklace.....................$45.00
This familiar forked symbol was created by Gerald Holtom,
a commercial designer and artist in Britain. In 1958 he was
commissioned by the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament in
Britain to make a symbol for use in a protest against the
Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England.
At first the design was confined to that organization, but later
generalized to become an icon of the 1960s anti-war movement.
The creator of the symbol encouraged its peaceful use and didnt
copyright the design. The symbol is a combination of the semaphoric
signals for the letters N and D (standing for Nuclear Disarmament).
Semaphore signals are a way of signaling with lights or flags in specific
positions. In this case the letter N looks like an upside-down v and
the letter d is formed by holding one flag pointed up and the other down
(like the hands of a clock at 12 and 6). These two signals imposed over
each other form the shape of the peace symbol. The Peace Symbol
was designed and completed February 21, 1958
...and will be 50 years old in 2008.
Our tear dropped shaped Peace Symbol was created in Sterling Silver
to commemorate the 50th birthday of this familiar icon that still
brings to mind that there is hope for peace. The Symbol is approximately
1 1/8 long. The pendant comes with a sterling silver figaro style chain (20 long).
